Beijing Suburb
HUANG Wenhai • 2002
This film uses a documentary approach to show the situation of wandering artists living in the suburbs of Beijing (Songzhuang) in the late 1990s. In order to create freely, some of them disappeared, some of them were imprisoned, some of them went crazy, and some of them committed suicide. This is a sad song dedicated to the artists living in the North.

Director
At the age of 29, I was summoned by cinema to join the sea of anger. In Beijing, I set up the Beijing Four Trees Film Production Company with my friends Qiu Zhihong, Bow Guangshan and Hu Zhi. After the company was established, the first film we invested in was Beijing Suburb, a 16mm film that cost RMB 400,000, a small budget independent production, but at that time, a house in Tongzhou district of Beijing was only RMB 800 per square metre.
